After Effects Tutorial : Color Correction

After Effects is a very effective software for any kind of color correction. In this original image i have composited a bottle created in 3D using the Lathe tool and placed it in front of this bridge image which has strong green color. The bottle on the other hand has redish color.I then composited both these images in adobe photoshop to create this original image. However as you can see that the bottle totally looks out of context as it doesnot carry any reflection from the green light lit background. To solve this problem , i then imported this original image psd file into after-effects as a composition and gradually started working on the color correction of the bottle.

Since i wanted to match the bottle's color to match with the bridge's color i applied the color correction tool on it instead of the bridge. The color correction tool i chose for this task is Effects--Color Correction--levels.

  • First i chose the Red Channel from RGB color mode of Level and then i also turned the display option of the Composition window to Red from RGB color option given below the Composition window.

  • Then i gradually matched the brightness and contrast of the background image and bottle using using black input and white input points.

  • To match the brightness of the background image with the foreground image, first mark out the dark areas of the background image and see the value of Red color in the info palette on the right hand corner. The darker areas will show lower values for red color while brighter areas will show higher values for red color.Adjust the red value for brighter areas with white white input controller and that of the darker area with black input controller.

  • Once i had matched the Red Channel,i followed the same routine for green and blue channels.Having adjusted the black and white points of both the images i then went back to the RGB mode readjusted the Gamma for RGB to make color matching more accurate.

  • This way i was able to get the current color correction.
